-
- This version of AUTOCW can run either under OS/2 or MS-DOS version 3.x.
- It has been tested on the following hardware:
-
- NEC PowerMate 1, PowerMate 2, PowerMate Portable, PowerMate 386/20,
- PowerMate Portable SX
- IBM: XT, AT 8MHz, PS/2 model 50
- Zenith Z-180
- Compaq 386
-
- AUTOCW should work on any machine which is both BIOS and Hardware
- compatible with either the XT or AT.
-
- AUTOCW is a morse code teaching and practice aid. It allows the student to
- learn morse code at various rates from 5 to 40 WPM. Additionally it allows
- the inter-character spacing to be controlled separatly from the speed of the
- characters. This enhances the learning of Morse code by not forcing the
- student to relearn what the Morse characters sound like at different speeds.
-
- This is NO COST software. It is NOT public domain, and you CANNOT be charged
- ANY fee for this software. You may GIVE a copy to any person who asks for
- this as long as there is NO charge in anyway involved in obtaining the copy.
- This software is being made available to help persons interested in obtaining
- or upgrading their Amateur Radio license to do so.
-
- SUPPORT: If you have any questions or comments about AUTOCW, I would be glad
- to hear them. However, if you expect an answer, you MUST include a Stamped,
- Self Adressed, Envelope.
-
- This program is being distributed as freeware. You may give a copy to a
- friend as long as no money changes hands. Recognized users groups may charge
- a small fee (no more than $5.00) to recover duplication costs. Networks such
- as USENET, COMPUSERVE, and others that do not charge for per-program downloads
- may also distribute AutoCW.
-
- AUTOCW has been designed to send Morse code at accurate speeds. It is NOT
- dependant on a particular CPU clock speed. Therefore it should operate
- accurately on any of the supported hardware. There is NO calibration needed
- as with other non-state-of-the-art software products. To check the accuracy
- of any Morse code sending program, send the word 'PARIS' repeatedly. The
- number of words sent in a minute is the WPM rate.
-
- IE: To test AUTOCW for accurate sending at 5 WPM...
-
- Create a file that contains the following line:
-
- PARIS PARIS PARIS PARIS PARIS
-
- Start AUTOCW and set the WPM rate for 5.
- Press F7 and enter the name of the file which contains
- the '5 word paris' text.
- Time how long AUTOCW takes to send the text, it should
- take 1 minute.
-
- To test other speeds, simply create a file that contains
- the proper number of 'PARIS' text for the same WPM rate.
- Be sure that there is only 1 space between the words.
- Time the results. IE: 13 WPM should send 'PARIS ' 13
- times in one minute.
-
- AUTOCW can generate Morse code in three methods:
-
- 1 - From the keyboard.
-
- 2 - Randomly generated groups of 5
- Letters only
- Letters and Numbers
- Letters, Numbers, and punctuation
- A list of any characters that you input
-
- 3 - Input from a text file.
-
- When you start AUTOCW it will prompt you for the desired speed. Also you may
- set the frequency of the sound from the speaker.
-
- To generate random code, at any time press:
-
- F2 for letters only
- F3 for letters and numbers
- F4 for letters and punctuation
- F5 for a list of letters of your choice
-
- During random code generation, press any key to return to keyboard mode.
-
- You may create practice files or simulated exams with a standard text editor.
- If you use a word processor be sure to create the file in ASCII or
- NON-DOCUMENT mode. To send text from a file, press F7, you will be prompted
- for the name of the file to be sent. Enter the file name and press return.
- The file will now be sent. To interupt the sending, press any key and you
- will be returned to keyboard mode.
-
- To send code from a text file, at any time press F7, you will be prompted for
- the name of the file to send. At the file name prompt, you may enter a
- question mark (?) to see a list of available files. Don't try and send '.EXE'
- or '.COM' files!. You may also choose to have the file repeated automatically.
-
- To set the character sending speed separate from the WPM rate start AUTOCW
- with the '/c' switch. You will then be prompted separately for the character
- send speed, at the start of the program. If you do NOT specify the '/c'
- switch, you may still change the character spacing by pressing the F8 key, and
- entering the desired speed and word-per-minute rate.
-
- It is desirable for the new student to learn morse code with the character
- speed set at the default by the program. This is to prevent the student from
- having to relearn what each character sounds like as his/her speed increases.
- The character speed control cannot normally be accessed unless the '/c'
- switch is given on the command line at run time.
-
- The sending speed must always be less than the character speed. Therefore,
- if speeds greater than 20 WPM (the default character speed) is desired, the
- '/c' switch must be given and then the desired character and sending speed
- may be entered as desired over the range of 5 to 40 WPM.
-
- The following keys send the appropiate Morse code character:
-
- numbers '0' - '9'
- letters 'A' - 'Z'
- period '.'
- comma ','
- slant '/'
-
- The following keys send the indicated Morse code character:
-
- Key Displays as Sends
-
- = *BT* double dash (BT)
- ; *AR* end of message (AR)
- [ *AS* wait (AS)
- ] *SK* End of work (SK)
- \ *KN* go only (KN)
-
- Notes:
-
- Characters are sent to the screen just before they are sent. This is to
- allow the student to become familiar with the characters as they are heard.
- Also, any key pressed that is not assigned a proper morse character will
- simply be echoed to the screen.
